Autel Evo 2 Obstacle Sensing Reviewed
The new Autel Evo 2 can sense objects in all directions. This is know as Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing. It can then fly around these objects or if no path available then it will hover in place.
How the Autel Evo 2 Obstacle Sensing Works
The Autel Evo 2 is equipped with 12 Omnidirectional computer vision sensors on all sides of the drone. Then, there is another 2 ultrasonic sensors under the drone for precision hovering.
Autel Evo 2 Obstacle Sensing Range
- Forward: 0.5 to 40 meters (1.64 to 131 feet)
- Backward: 0.5 to 32 meters (1.64 to 105 feet)
- Upwards: 0.5 to 24 meters 1.64 to 78 feet)
- Downward: 0.5 to 22 meters (1.64 to 72 feet)
- Sides: 0.5 to 24 meters (1.64 to 78 feet)
Note: As you can see, there are big differences in the minimum and maximum detection range of the vision sensors on the Autel Evo 2.
Autel Evo 2 Obstacle Sensing Field Of View (FOV)
- Forward: Horizontal: 60°, Vertical: 80°
- Backward: 60°, Vertical: 80°
- Upward: 60°, Vertical: 50°
- Downward: 60°, Vertical: 50°
Note: Now, while all 6 sides on the Autel Evo 2 are covered, Omnidirectional obstacle sensing does not fully cover the full 360 degree circumference of the quadcopter. There will be blind spots in the 4 diagonal spots (corners), so it is always a good idea to pay close attention to the surroundings when flying.
Lighting, patterns and speed are some of the main reasons why the detection range will vary. Also, the obstacle sensing will not pick up on small objects (wires, nets, small branches), moving objects, transparent surfaces (windows) or reflective surfaces (mirrors).
Note: Read the user guide, which comes with the Evo 2 to become fully familiar with the obstacles sensing technology on this quadcopter.
Obstacle Sensing is fascinating technology and you can read further in this article entitled “Top Collision Avoidance Drones And Obstacle Detection Explained“.
